My friend was dog sitting a pair of giant white dogs in Coquitlam, so we were definitely a little restricted. The trail is definitely dog friendly and trail-runner friendly. I took on about a third of the trail barefoot. We started hiking before 9 am on Saturday morning and I would say it was not busy, except for the activity near the parking lot. Many day users come for the beach. One thing worth noting, is that the park closes when the parking lot is full. I have no idea how often this happens, but I'd recommend an early start on sunny summer weekend days.
The beginning starts up with most of the elevation gain as you head north from the west side of the lake.
