Beautiful day for a trek through the forest today!
Zeus and I set out from the corral parking lot. This trail wasn't nearly as bad as last time. The trail floor is actually showing itself here and there. Around the 3km mark I ended up having to put my microspikes on. Luckily the ground is pretty frozen so no dirt balls! :)
Once you come out of the corral trail at Mike the Incline trail is almost directly across from you. I had planned on taking the Whisky trail and start from around the other side of the lake clockwise but...I thought, get a work out in and carry on. :) A work out indeed. I haven't been on any steep trails lately, especially covered in ice. I must be out of shape because this one nearly killed me :)
Once up Alouette Fire Access trail it had a small switchback but the increase in elevation was gradual. I saw lots of tracks leading here and there, but I chose to follow my map this time. Its easy to get led off in the wrong direction. I also had my backtrack if I needed it. The trails are fairly well marked but I wouldn't go up without a gps to map your way out if need be. The snow had a crust on it for the most part but on occasion, Zeus and I would sink in about 3ft or so. He would always look back at me as to say "What is happening to me?!" Snowshoes might have been helpful here but...we managed.
Nearing the top of my loop I ran into a couple of campers. Just two guys on their own and me. After passing Mike Lake I had the impression I was literally on my own. These guys had very viscous dogs and I didn't get a good feeling so...I turned back. Zeus would have lost that battle :)
So I didn't reach my destination of Alouette lookout but I had an awesome day! Hardly anyone on the trails, the sun was out and I was in the trees. What more could you ask for. :)
I'll definitely go back to finish this trek on another day.
